Learn More About Mariner Polyester Plus from Nolan
How does the knitted Soft Back differ from non-woven competitors?
Many non-woven backings trap salt and environmental grit. This debris acts like sandpaper against a boat’s surface. We designed our specialised knitted backing to remain clean and non-abrasive. This significantly reduces the risk of scratching delicate gelcoats or polished finishes.
Is the Soft Back formulation also waterproof?
Yes. Both the Plus (314GSM) and Soft Back (390GSM) versions feature a high-performance PU coating on the underside. This coating ensures total waterproof integrity. The Soft Back is an excellent choice when you need moisture protection and a non-abrasive surface.
What does ATY mean in a marine polyester fabric?
ATY stands for Air Textured Yarn. Traditional polyester yarns often look shiny or “plastic.” Instead, ATY uses a mechanical process to bulk up the yarn. This creates a matte finish and a heavy-duty texture. This innovation provides a high-end look while maintaining polyester’s inherent strength.
Does Mariner Polyester Plus require special sewing machine settings?
No. We prioritised “true workability” as a primary design goal. The fabric sews pucker-free on consistent machine settings. You won’t have to fight the material or constantly adjust thread tension and foot pressure. This remains true even when sewing the heavier 390GSM Soft Back option.
Are both the Plus and Soft Back Plus fabrics available in a 2m width?
Yes. We supply both formulations at a 2m width. This width allows for better yield and fewer seams. It is ideal for large projects like cockpit covers, trailer boat travel covers, umbrellas, awnings, or large bimini tops.
How is Mariner Polyester Plus both high-performance and competitively priced?
Nolan has specifically engineered this range to respond to a market demand for a more affordable, high-quality fabric. We have also ensured it easily endures the demands of a marine environment and the harsh and varied Australian climates. How? We partner with industry-leading textile manufacturers who focus on innovative manufacturing and high-performance polyester fibres. This creates a product that protects your business margins while maintaining the high standards your reputation is built on.
What does “PFAS-free” mean for this marine-grade polyester?
PFAS-free means we manufacture the fabric without “forever chemicals.” Our unique surface impregnation and PU coating provide industry-leading water repellency. This process maintains waterproof integrity while protecting the environment. You get rugged performance with a much cleaner environmental footprint.
What are the best applications for Mariner Polyester Plus?
The best applications for a 2m-wide waterproof marine polyester include:
- Bimini Tops: The pliable nature of the fabric makes it the best choice for moulding over complex frames. You get a clean, architectural look without the fabric fighting you.
- Highway-Ready Trailer Boat Travel Covers: With its 90,000-rub Martindale abrasion rating, it withstands the high-speed wind flap and friction of road travel.
- Outboard Engine & Jet Ski Covers: It provides a snug, professional fit that is easy to install and remove while offering total UV and water protection.
- T-Tops: Its stability ensures it stays taut in frames, even in high-moisture marine environments.
What are the best applications for Mariner Polyester Plus Soft Back?
The Soft Back version is specifically engineered for applications that require a protective layer between the rugged exterior and the surface, including:
- Padded Table & Console Covers: Perfect for protecting high-gloss timber or acrylic tables on deck. The soft backing won’t scratch the surface, and the exterior remains waterproof.
- Storage Covers for High-End Gelcoats: Most useful for luxury boats or newly sprayed hulls where road grit or salt trapped under a standard cover would act like sandpaper.
- Outdoor Cushions & Seating: The 390GSM weight provides a more substantial feel for upholstery, while the soft back adds a layer of comfort and durability for internal foam.
- Bimini Interiors: Fabricators appreciate the textural and aesthetic point of difference the contrasting Soft Back adds to the underside of a bimini, resulting in a premium look to the cockpit interior.
